Jon Watts On Blade Appearing In A ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Sequel

It was revealed a few weeks ago that the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming will feature a different Marvel Cinematic Universe hero (other than Iron Man) that will join Tom Holland’s Peter Parker on his next adventure. It’s also apparent that with the appearance of Vulture, Shocker and other villains in the film, Marvel Studios is taking full advantage of Spidey’s vast rogues gallery. So after the new film hits theaters, the big question on a lot of fan’s minds will be: “What’s next?” Who is going to be the villain in the next film? What MCU hero will next share the screen with Spidey? Director Jon Watts might already have a couple of ideas....

During a recent interview with We Got This Covered, Watts was first asked about the Chameleon appearing as the villain in the next Spider-Man installment. Here is his reaction to that suggestion: “Yeah, Chameleon’s cool. I wonder is it that cool of an ability nowadays? Like, we’d have to come up with a way to make him to be more than just that. But Chameleon is great and he’s also one of the earlier day villains. I mainly focused on the bad villains as just a joke because there are so many really silly guys. Like Big Wheel. [laughs] So I’ve kind of done the wrong research so far in who the next villain could be. Swarm… [laughs]”.....

The interviewer then suggested Morbius the Living Vampire, which lead Watts to a pretty interesting idea: “Morbius is kind of cool! The tone of the character is pretty dark, but the vampire/Marvel Universe thing is pretty cool. Maybe we could get Blade to show up, too? That’d be neat.” While I don’t think we’ll be seeing Blade or Morbius show up in the next standalone Spidey film, it is at least within the realm of possibilities, legally-speaking. While the first three Blade films were made by New Line Cinema, Kevin Feige revealed in 2013 that the rights to the character, as well as Punisher and Ghost Rider, had reverted back to Marvel Studios.

While Punisher and Ghost Rider have been implemented into the Marvel television world, we’ve yet to hear of any concrete plans for the “daywalker.” With Marvel trying to incorporate villains we’ve never seen on-screen before, Morbius would definitely be an interesting choice that would also fall into that category, and he would be a perfect way of re-introducing Blade to the movie-going audience. Personally, I would rather see him incorporating into the Marvel Netflix world, along with characters like Ghost Rider and Moon Knight, but I would be down for him teaming up with Spidey, if done correctly.
For now go & enjoy Spiderman: Homecoming on
